1) Message boards : Number crunching : New work (Message 139)

I haven't spent anytime looking at the BOINC server code but I think the server has the ability to schedule work based on criteria (32bit, amount of memory, cores, etc). If so, you may not have to spend the resources writing code to "tier" resources. A lot of it might already be built in to the scheduler. I'm thinking about projects that require homogeneous redundancy. The server would have to know what hosts are in a class and what makes up a class so as to schedule to the right host. How that is defined, I'm not sure.

Is it possible that the computing requirements for jobs to be submitted to BOINC@TACC are too low. I understand that not all volunteers have the same computing resources but it seems the requirements are set for lowest common denominator (8GB, 4 core). Jobs that have executed on my platforms have barely taxed the systems. Most run for 2 minutes or less. Some of us volunteers have larger resources (32GB, 32core) that could handle larger jobs. I know it would be a programming chore but would it be possible to divide volunteer resources into tiers and allow larger jobs to be submitted to BOINC@TACC? The BOINC server knows the capabilities of the hosts that are connected to it. The lack of work may be that researchers are having a hard time finding work that fits on the BOINC@TACC platform.

I was getting the same error after install and after upgrading but a restart of BOINC fixed the problem. Since you rebooted, that should have allowed BOINC to find the VBox instance. Are you using the Oracle repository or the base Ubuntu repositories? I installed from the Oracle repository and it seemed to work for me.

My steps:

wget -q https://www.virtualbox.org/download/oracle_vbox_2016.asc -O- | sudo apt-key add -
sudo apt-add-repository "deb [arch=amd64] http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian $(lsb_release -cs) contrib"
sudo apt update
sudo apt install virualbox-6.0

After install completes, just restart the boinc client

When selecting team and clicking on the "Join This Team" button, I get a database error and a message saying to try again later. Have been trying for the past 5 hours.
