Yes, and also to the VMs in the cloud - those run Docker containers without VirtualBox.

Dear All:

Thanks for your continued support for the BOINC@TACC project!

Just wanted to give you all a heads-up that between today and next Monday, you would see an increase in the number of jobs submitted from BOINC@TACC. Majority of these jobs would be related to the SARS-COV2 related research.

Best Regards,
The BOINC@TACC Development Team

Greetings,

Thank you for supporting the BOINC@TACC project!

Could you please send us an email at rauta@tacc.utexas.edu with the desired change in the screen-name?

The list of teams for the BOINC@TACC project is at the following URL: https://boinc.tacc.utexas.edu/top_teams.php?sort_by=expavg_credit&offset=0

Seems like the BOINC@POLAND team has not yet been formed. You can form new teams after at least one job has been be executed through your client. However, we will check to make sure that there is no error in the process of creating teams.

Thanks,
The BOINC@TACC team

Another thought, look at "Options" then "Computing preferences" in BOINC Manager. Here, you can set or adjust the work fetch parameters. In the "Other" box, you can change or adjust work fetch, (amongst other things), if you have a stable internet connection, you don't really need store additional days or parts of days work, BOINC will grab new work when it needs to do so. In the "Other" box, I keep "Store at least" set to 0.25 and "Store up to an additional" set to zero.

Like that, the machines have a very small cache of work ready to run in the event of something daft happening, but 6 hours or so, (0.25 days). The options are of use if you are on a dial up or another connection that is not ALWAYS ON. I've run my systems like that for years without incident.

I don't recall what the "out of the box" defaults were. I am subscribed to this thread, if there are any questions etc. just post them here, I'll get a mail to say that something needs attention. I've been with BOINC since it started, and Davids earlier project before that in the 1990's - if I don't know, I probably know someone who does.

Greetings,

The project is still active but we do not yet have a steady flow of jobs for the volunteers. We maintain the BOINC@TACC infrastructure but the actual users of the infrastructure are other scholars and researchers in the community. We are working with a new group of researchers who are preparing their models to take advantage of BOINC@TACC. They have not provided us with an exact timeline for job submission though but we anticipate that they should be able to start computing with BOINC@TACC anytime now.

Thanks,
The BOINC@TACC team

Greetings,

Thanks for the queries about the new work units!

We are working with a new group of researchers who are in the process of developing their experiments for leveraging BOINC@TACC. They could be ready to submit their jobs anytime now but they have not yet provided us an update on their timeline.

Sorry about raising the volunteers' expectations before the researchers are ready with their experiments but we were just too excited about the new workload that we wanted to let our volunteers know about it ASAP.

The BOINC@TACC team

Greetings,

Thanks for joining the project and bringing the issues to our notice!

We have been completely puzzled about your hosts (and also other hosts as well) getting attached to a different account ("rituarora") than yours, and we think there is a software bug somewhere. Could you please provide all the steps that you took to attach the host/s so that we can replicate the scenario at our end in order to troubleshoot the issue?

Sorry for all the inconvenience and thanks for joining the project!

Thanks for sharing the news! TACC staff, or the researchers at TACC, are not the direct consumers of the volunteered compute-cycles. BOINC@TACC is primarily meant for use by the researchers in the academic community, who have also been allocated compute-time on TACC systems, but do not have sufficient allocation left.

TACC systems are shared resources. There could be thousands of researchers running their jobs simultaneously on these systems. To ensure the fair-use of the systems, there are queuing policies in place. If the researchers have a low-priority assigned for their jobs on these systems and their jobs would not run for let us say, 2-3 days, then they can choose to run their jobs through BOINC@TACC.

Greetings, that is a great idea - thanks for sharing! We will surely explore our options for implementing the tiered nature of resources. Thanks again!

Is it possible that the computing requirements for jobs to be submitted to BOINC@TACC are too low. I understand that not all volunteers have the same computing resources but it seems the requirements are set for lowest common denominator (8GB, 4 core). Jobs that have executed on my platforms have barely taxed the systems. Most run for 2 minutes or less. Some of us volunteers have larger resources (32GB, 32core) that could handle larger jobs. I know it would be a programming chore but would it be possible to divide volunteer resources into tiers and allow larger jobs to be submitted to BOINC@TACC? The BOINC server knows the capabilities of the hosts that are connected to it. The lack of work may be that researchers are having a hard time finding work that fits on the BOINC@TACC platform.

Hammy - While we have replied to your similar comment in another thread ( https://boinc.tacc.utexas.edu/forum_thread.php?id=32 ), we will clarify here too:

The project is live and several volunteers have already helped us in running jobs.

There is nothing wrong with the project as far as we understand the right from wrong.

We are actively rolling out new features and improving the software, and hence, the project's development (including maintenance) is a continuous process.

Thanks,
The BOINC@TACC Team

Great story to read but such a shame that there is rarely any work available for all the willing volunteers. Is there something wrong with the project, or is it still in development mode?

I had a similar problem, tried to add the avatar that I have been using without difficulty for decades on BOINC, and all I get is a load of unintelligible gibberish. This project sure does seem to have some issues, apart from not having any work that is!!!!

What is the exact error message that you see? We see that some of the other users are able to upload avatars and have them displayed on their profiles.

Greetings,

Thanks for checking on the work units and volunteering for the project! We are very grateful for your kind support!

The nature of this project is such that we do not have a consistent level of work-load for our volunteers. We are not the direct producers of the jobs or the consumers of the results. We are like a gateway for connecting the scholars and researchers from the academia with the resources volunteered by the community. It is up to the researchers/scholars as to when they would prefer to submit jobs to BOINC@TACC. We are actively mobilizing the community to take advantage of BOINC@TACC and are hopeful of a consistent pipeline of jobs with the growth in the number of researchers/scholars interested in BOINC@TACC.

Best wishes and regards,
The BOINC@TACC Team
