1) Questions and Answers : Preferences : Unable to join my Team, and other account settings. (Message 167)

Post:
Greetings,

Thanks for joining the project and bringing the issues to our notice!

We have been completely puzzled about your hosts (and also other hosts as well) getting attached to a different account ("rituarora") than yours, and we think there is a software bug somewhere. Could you please provide all the steps that you took to attach the host/s so that we can replicate the scenario at our end in order to troubleshoot the issue?

Sorry for all the inconvenience and thanks for joining the project!

Best Regards,
The BOINC@TACC Team

Thanks for sharing the news! TACC staff, or the researchers at TACC, are not the direct consumers of the volunteered compute-cycles. BOINC@TACC is primarily meant for use by the researchers in the academic community, who have also been allocated compute-time on TACC systems, but do not have sufficient allocation left.

TACC systems are shared resources. There could be thousands of researchers running their jobs simultaneously on these systems. To ensure the fair-use of the systems, there are queuing policies in place. If the researchers have a low-priority assigned for their jobs on these systems and their jobs would not run for let us say, 2-3 days, then they can choose to run their jobs through BOINC@TACC.

Best Regards,
BOINC@TACC Team

Greetings, that is a great idea - thanks for sharing! We will surely explore our options for implementing the tiered nature of resources. Thanks again!

Is it possible that the computing requirements for jobs to be submitted to BOINC@TACC are too low. I understand that not all volunteers have the same computing resources but it seems the requirements are set for lowest common denominator (8GB, 4 core). Jobs that have executed on my platforms have barely taxed the systems. Most run for 2 minutes or less. Some of us volunteers have larger resources (32GB, 32core) that could handle larger jobs. I know it would be a programming chore but would it be possible to divide volunteer resources into tiers and allow larger jobs to be submitted to BOINC@TACC? The BOINC server knows the capabilities of the hosts that are connected to it. The lack of work may be that researchers are having a hard time finding work that fits on the BOINC@TACC platform.

Greetings,

We have recently updated the BOINC@TACC website such that now the volunteers can choose to display their actual screen-names directly from their account information page after logging in: https://boinc.tacc.utexas.edu/home.php

Hammy - While we have replied to your similar comment in another thread ( https://boinc.tacc.utexas.edu/forum_thread.php?id=32 ), we will clarify here too:

The project is live and several volunteers have already helped us in running jobs.

There is nothing wrong with the project as far as we understand the right from wrong.

We are actively rolling out new features and improving the software, and hence, the project's development (including maintenance) is a continuous process.

Thanks,
The BOINC@TACC Team

Great story to read but such a shame that there is rarely any work available for all the willing volunteers. Is there something wrong with the project, or is it still in development mode?

I had a similar problem, tried to add the avatar that I have been using without difficulty for decades on BOINC, and all I get is a load of unintelligible gibberish. This project sure does seem to have some issues, apart from not having any work that is!!!!

What is the exact error message that you see? We see that some of the other users are able to upload avatars and have them displayed on their profiles.

Thanks,
The BOINC@TACC Team

Greetings,

Thanks for checking on the work units and volunteering for the project! We are very grateful for your kind support!

The nature of this project is such that we do not have a consistent level of work-load for our volunteers. We are not the direct producers of the jobs or the consumers of the results. We are like a gateway for connecting the scholars and researchers from the academia with the resources volunteered by the community. It is up to the researchers/scholars as to when they would prefer to submit jobs to BOINC@TACC. We are actively mobilizing the community to take advantage of BOINC@TACC and are hopeful of a consistent pipeline of jobs with the growth in the number of researchers/scholars interested in BOINC@TACC.

Best wishes and regards,
The BOINC@TACC Team

Does TACC require VirtualBox for all its projects???

Do you mean to ask if all the applications run through BOINC@TACC require VirtualBox? If so, then the answer is: 1) yes, if you are donating computing time on your laptop, desktop, or tablet, 2) no, if you are donating computing time on the VMs in the cloud.

Thanks!
13) Questions and Answers : Web site : User Name Search does not work (Message 51)
Posted 7 Mar 2019 by rituarora
Post:
If I use a Name it returns:

User Search Results
No users match your search criteria.

If I use the random number, that no one knows who it relates to then the user record is returned but still not showing the name.

This makes this facility a waist of time.

That is how we intended the website to work. One can search users only on the basis of their leaderboard names.

By default, the names are randomized. However, if someone explicitly sends in a request to change their display name from a system assigned random string to their chosen screen names, only then their display name changes on the leaderboard and others can look them up using this name:

So sorry to hear that you are running into the issue while connecting to the project!

I did the testing by removing the project through the BOINC manager, going to "View" tab of the BOINC manager, and then selecting "Simple View". After that, I clicked on "Add Project" and selected BOINC@TACC from the drop-down list. After a wait of few seconds, I was able to connect to the project. Were your steps to add the project similar to mine?

Thanks!

I'm not sure if this was a replay to my post. But assuming it is, I joined without ever clicking on the "rules and policies" link. I assume 99%+ never do either. And if that is the only opportunity to ever see that page, that's a problem. It should be someplace that you can go to anytime you have a question or concern about rules or policies. Right? Maybe a Link under "Site" or "About"? Follow my train of thought: I have joined the project, and am now happily crunching along. I see my stats aren't showing my name, in fact, I can't find my name anywhere. Just a bunch of gibberish names. I click through all the menus, and nothing talks about it at all. Now what? There is no way to retroactively know about that info page. Heck, even if I did click on that page when I joined, how do I get back to it if I forgot about it?

Great point- Thanks! We will take care of making the information more accessible than now.
17) Message boards : Number crunching : anonymized names (Message 33)

Post:
First, thanks for sending an email to alert people about the anonymized name.

My suggestion would be to add the info provided in this thread to that email. Not the link, but the email address to use to change it to the name you really want to use.

Better still IMO would be to put the option in the preferences. Then the email would simply inform people that they need to go to the preferences to turn off the randomizing.

Now a question. Was anonymizing the names chosen as a GDPR solution which would allow you to export stats without user consent? If so, it sounds like a good way to do it. Just need to find a better way for folks to understand what's going on.

Thanks.

Those are great suggestions - thanks a lot! We will work on incorporating those soon. Our volunteer community is great - you all not only donate computing power but also send us great ideas and feedback - thanks again!

Yes, the names were anonymized by default to be compliant with the GDPR. We were expecting volunteers from Europe. We have not yet started exporting stats, and need to plan for how to do it in the best way without running into any non-compliance related risk.

Thanks!

Greetings,

BOINC@TACC is only open to those researchers who have been approved to access the resources at the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) through a peer-review resource allocation process. These researchers are from very diverse domains, such as: computational fluid dynamics, computational chemistry, computational biology, astronomy, and social sciences. They can elect to either run software packages maintained by us (viz., Autodock-vina, NAMD, LAMMPS, GROMACS and OpenSees) or can run their own custom-written applications.

Thanks for the question and for supporting the project!
