If/when stats get exported, I was wondering which name is exported. Or if that would be an option to do so or a choice of which one.

Hello
why are the user names anonymous?
thank you

Greetings,

As per the project policy, by default, the names displayed on the leaderboard are anonymized. However, volunteers are welcome to send in a request to use their screen names on the leaderboard instead of their anonymized names. This project policy is explained under "Privacy policy" on the following page:

https://boinc.tacc.utexas.edu/info.php

Thanks for your kind support!

There is no link to this "info" page anywhere on the site. I went through every link in the menu bar at the top. Maybe I missed it. But I don't think so.

First, thanks for sending an email to alert people about the anonymized name.

My suggestion would be to add the info provided in this thread to that email. Not the link, but the email address to use to change it to the name you really want to use.

Better still IMO would be to put the option in the preferences. Then the email would simply inform people that they need to go to the preferences to turn off the randomizing.

Now a question. Was anonymizing the names chosen as a GDPR solution which would allow you to export stats without user consent? If so, it sounds like a good way to do it. Just need to find a better way for folks to understand what's going on.

Thanks.

Those are great suggestions - thanks a lot! We will work on incorporating those soon. Our volunteer community is great - you all not only donate computing power but also send us great ideas and feedback - thanks again!

Yes, the names were anonymized by default to be compliant with the GDPR. We were expecting volunteers from Europe. We have not yet started exporting stats, and need to plan for how to do it in the best way without running into any non-compliance related risk.

Thanks!

I'm not sure if this was a replay to my post. But assuming it is, I joined without ever clicking on the "rules and policies" link. I assume 99%+ never do either. And if that is the only opportunity to ever see that page, that's a problem. It should be someplace that you can go to anytime you have a question or concern about rules or policies. Right? Maybe a Link under "Site" or "About"? Follow my train of thought: I have joined the project, and am now happily crunching along. I see my stats aren't showing my name, in fact, I can't find my name anywhere. Just a bunch of gibberish names. I click through all the menus, and nothing talks about it at all. Now what? There is no way to retroactively know about that info page. Heck, even if I did click on that page when I joined, how do I get back to it if I forgot about it?

Great point- Thanks! We will take care of making the information more accessible than now.

It seems to me that the commune boinc prefers the nicks
many of the volunteers know each other by their nicks
not know that the names are the best of all things
it's my personal opinion
thank you

I agree but you can do that by sending an email to the address in one of the replies above.

I could be wrong but here's my understanding of what's going on here.

All the other BOINC sites I've noticed are either not dealing with the new EU regs at all or are doing so by ceasing the exporting of stats altogether unless users opt in. The admins here have decided to do it differently, a choice made easier because they didn't start the project until after GIDP went into effect. They're planning to export stats for everybody without an opt-in but they've anonymized the user names. Users can de-anonymize by choice.

If I'm understanding that correctly I like the idea better than the opt-in, I just wish that the anonymizing were BOINC-wide so the stats sites could show accurate cross-project info with anonymized names.

- Dick

PS: I've never used any form of the word anonymize as often in one day as I just did.

The new edition of the BOINC server code has a release to join authorizing whatever nobody cares about. Einstein & LHC have upgraded.

I do not like the strange names and want to be called Aurum and not %#nm*jgc#thd439. At least my CPID is right.

There is a button on the account page to show the actual username publicly, but it doesn't seem to be working. I see:

Notice: Trying to get property of non-object in /home/boincadm/project/html/inc/deanonymize_user.inc on line 35

Notice: Trying to get property of non-object in /home/boincadm/project/html/inc/deanonymize_user.inc on line 36

I joined my team and my name there is a blank field.
